Oranos Technical Documentation

Everything you need to master the Oranos infinite canvas: file format specification, P2P collaboration protocols, keyboard shortcuts, and export workflows.

1. Getting Started

Oranos requires no account setup. Simply navigate to /board to open a fresh infinite canvas. Your active board is automatically saved into your browser's local storage.

  • • Use tool pill buttons or number hotkeys (1–9) to select shapes.
  • • Hold Space or select Hand tool (H) to pan across the infinite canvas.
  • • Double-click text elements or sticky notes to edit text.

2. The .oranos File Format

The .oranos file format is a self-contained JSON schema storing scene elements, viewport coordinates, and inline Base64 data URLs for images.

{
  "version": 1,
  "elements": [
    {
      "id": "el_123",
      "type": "image",
      "src": "data:image/webp;base64,...",
      "width": 520, "height": 346
    }
  ],
  "viewport": { "scrollX": 0, "scrollY": 0, "zoom": 1 }
}

3. Live P2P Collaboration

Click Share in the top bar to generate a 4-letter room code (e.g., ABCD). Peer connections are established over encrypted WebRTC data channels for up to 4 concurrent users per room.

Missing image elements are automatically fragmented into chunks and synced asynchronously to newly connected room peers.

4. Export Options

  • • Export PNG
  • Renders canvas to high-DPI pixel bitmap with optional background transparency.
  • • Export SVG
  • Generates clean vector path XML for scaling without quality loss.
  • • Save .oranos File
  • Saves portable local file with 100% data payload embedded.
